An air fryer saves washing-up until you let grease build up around the basket and heating element. Then the next batch of chips produces an unpleasant smell, the drawer looks permanently brown and food starts sticking where it didn't before. The best time to clean an air fryer is after it has cooled following use, before the residue hardens into another layer.

Most models are straightforward to maintain with warm water, washing-up liquid and a soft sponge. However, the removable basket and the electrical body are completely different cleaning areas. One may be dishwasher-safe; the other should never be submerged in the sink.

Look up the model's cleaning directions

Air fryers vary in basket shape, coating, accessories and heating-element access. A dual-drawer model can have different parts from an oven-style air fryer with shelves and a window.

Philips' official instructions say its pan and basket can generally be washed with warm water and detergent, while the electrical housing needs careful surface cleaning. Other brands may specify different dishwasher allowances.

Check the booklet or manufacturer's support page before dismantling anything. If a part doesn't release using the intended mechanism, don't force it.

Unplug and let it cool

Switch the machine off, unplug it and allow it to cool fully before handling the basket or interior. Philips suggests around thirty minutes for the models covered by its general instructions.

Don't try to wash a smoking-hot drawer under cold water. Sudden temperature changes may damage components or coatings and can create a scalding hazard.

Use a clean, clear counter and keep electrical cables away from the sink. A rushed clean around a connected appliance is not worth the risk.

Remove crumbs and loose grease first

Take out the basket and pan according to the model's instructions. Tip loose crumbs and food fragments into the bin once everything has cooled.

Wipe pooled grease with kitchen paper and dispose of it suitably. Pouring large amounts of cooking oil into the drain can contribute to blockages.

If bits of food are stuck inside the mesh, loosen them gently with a soft brush. Avoid scraping with a metal fork or knife.

Wash the basket with warm soapy water

Fill a suitable sink or basin with warm water and a little washing-up liquid. Use a non-abrasive sponge to wash the basket's sides, base and accessible openings.

Pay special attention to corners and under raised mesh where grease can build up. Gently rub rather than trying to polish away the non-stick finish.

Rinse thoroughly and inspect both sides. Greasy residue left on the underside may cause the same smell next time the appliance heats.

Soak stubborn deposits in the removable pan

For hardened food, Philips advises filling the removable pan with hot water and washing-up liquid and soaking for five to ten minutes.

This short soak softens residue without needing sharp tools. The process applies to the removable pan, not to the complete electrical appliance.

After soaking, clean with a soft sponge and rinse well. Repeat patiently if necessary rather than switching to steel wool.

Don't assume every part is dishwasher-safe

Some Philips baskets and pans are dishwasher-safe, but the same statement cannot be applied to every air fryer brand or accessory.

Check the model's manual for the basket, grill plate, window and any silicone pieces. A coating may survive a dishwasher yet wear faster under certain detergents or repeated high temperatures.

Hand washing often takes only a few minutes and lets you inspect the finish closely. Don't place electrical accessories or the body into a dishwasher.

Clean the outer casing safely

Wipe the exterior with a soft slightly damp cloth after unplugging. Dry it afterwards, particularly near the controls.

Avoid spraying degreaser into buttons, ventilation slots or digital displays. Liquid entering electronics can cause an electrical fault.

If the outside is particularly greasy, check whether a little mild soap on the cloth is permitted. Don't flood a seam or use an abrasive pad to remove fingerprints.

What about the heating element?

Grease sometimes collects near the upper heater. Philips provides a model-specific method for carefully accessing that area after unplugging and cooling the appliance.

Its guidance uses a soft sponge and, where necessary, a soft or medium-bristle brush; it warns against wire brushes and hard bristles. Follow your own model's positioning instructions before attempting access.

Do not bend the heating coil, unscrew protective covers or reach into inaccessible electrical compartments. If buildup cannot be reached safely using approved methods, seek appropriate service advice.

Never pour water into the electrical body

Internet cleaning hacks sometimes recommend adding water and detergent to the machine and running it as if it were a dishwasher. That can be unsafe or unsuitable unless the appliance explicitly has a manufacturer-approved steam-cleaning programme.

Philips does have a special steam-clean feature on certain NA55X models, but that is a designed function with specific instructions and is not permission to improvise the method on every model.

Stick to cleaning removable parts separately and wiping authorised surfaces. An air fryer is an electrical cooker, not a waterproof tub.

Dry parts before reassembly

After rinsing, let removable parts drain and dry, or wipe them with a clean cloth. Check seams and corners for trapped droplets.

Only reassemble when the parts are ready according to the manufacturer. Keep water away from plug connections and internal electronics.

A small amount of residual moisture on a washed basket may evaporate during use, but there is no advantage in storing components wet and shut away.

Reduce burnt smells at the source

If the air fryer smokes when cooking fatty foods, inspect for collected grease and stray pieces near the heating area after the appliance has cooled.

Don't automatically assume the smell means the non-stick coating is damaged. Burnt crumbs, old oil and packaging residue are common culprits.

However, persistent smoke, sparking, damaged insulation or an unusual electrical smell requires stopping use and arranging inspection. Washing won't fix an electrical fault.

What if the coating is peeling?

Check the manufacturer's safety guidance for the precise product. Philips notes that minor incidental scratches on its specified basket coatings can occur, but that doesn't cover every condition or brand.

Do not attack peeling or badly damaged areas with metal tools. If the basket is damaged beyond reasonable use, ask about a correct replacement part.

Using an incompatible aftermarket basket may affect airflow, fit or other safety features. Match the model rather than ordering purely by visual similarity.

How often should you clean it?

Wipe or wash removable food-contact parts after each use as their instructions require. This is considerably easier than tackling weeks of hardened oil.

Inspect the underside of the tray, heater area and exterior periodically. The frequency depends on whether you're cooking vegetables, breaded foods or very fatty meat.

If you use paper liners, ensure they are permitted and fitted safely. Liners don't remove the need to clean grease that collects elsewhere.

Quick troubleshooting

If the drawer won't slide smoothly, check for food debris or a component fitted incorrectly before forcing it. If the basket smells stale, make sure detergent and grease have been rinsed away.

Persistent sticky brown deposits usually need a short warm soak and patient soft brushing, not harsh industrial chemicals.

If the heating element area is too difficult to clean, check the official manual or support service rather than taking the appliance apart.

A reliable routine

Unplug, cool, remove crumbs, soak and wash the removable basket and pan, gently wipe approved interior surfaces and let everything dry before reassembly.

A clean air fryer should perform better and smell fresher without losing its protective coating. The best cleaning tool is usually a soft sponge used soon enough.
